D4RS meets Prime Minister and Government delegation

Doctors for Road Safety (D4RS) met with Prime Minister Dr Robert Abela and a delegation of Government officials including Ministers Dr Byron Camilleri and Dr Chris Bonnet on 2nd September 2025.

Road safety in Malta was discussed with a particular focus on the bill which updates the current law which addresses driving under the influence of alcohol and other psychoactive agents which may impair the ability to drive safely.

D4RS were invited to present a report on driving under the influence of psychoactive drugs. D4RS had already published a Position paper on the subject together with the Maltese Association of Psychiatry and the Foundation for Social Welfare Services.

In view of the recently proposed bill update, the same entities produced an updated Consensus report of the subject. This was presented at a meeting on the 9th September to the Minister for Home Affairs, Security, Reforms and Equality of Malta Dr Byron Camilleri by representatives of all three entities.

The report outlines the view of toxicology, psychiatry and substance misuse experts representing the three entities on the current legislation defining this subject in the European region, and the options which may be considered to be adopted in Malta to regulate this sector.
